TURISAZ (THURISAZ)

2026
Oil on canvas
50 × 50 cm (19.7 × 19.7 in)
Varnished

Turisaz is one of the most powerful symbols of the Elder Futhark, traditionally associated with strength, boundaries, protection, and the ability to confront disruptive forces. In Norse tradition, the rune is linked to the primordial giants — ancient embodiments of chaos and untamed power.

In this contemporary interpretation, the rune emerges from a field of layered crimson, violet, and deep blue tones. A central vertical axis divides opposing energies while the angular form of the symbol appears as both a blade and a threshold. The composition explores the moment when clarity cuts through confusion and when decisive action becomes necessary.

Rather than representing aggression, Turisaz symbolizes discernment, courage, and the capacity to remove obstacles that prevent growth. It speaks to the universal human experience of establishing healthy boundaries and protecting what is essential.

Built through multiple layers of oil paint and textured mark-making, the work reveals new details as light moves across its surface. The painting functions both as an abstract composition and as a meditation on transformation, resilience, and inner strength.

Part of the Runic Series, 2026.

Collector Note: Turisaz and Algiz were conceived as a complementary pair and are available individually or as a complete diptych. Together, they explore two archetypal dimensions of protection: the strength to establish boundaries and the wisdom to recognize them.
